Aeroflot's original layout combined 170 seats with four compartments of three berths each and a central restaurant cabin holding eight tables of six seats, a luxury aimed at both international passengers and government flights. In the early 1970s that interior was stripped from nearly the entire fleet -three or four aircraft excepted- and replaced with conventional seating, taking maximum capacity to 200 passengers. The four aircraft returned by Japan Airlines in 1969 were converted to the same standard before moving to long domestic routes.
