The B-25J was the highest-production version of the entire family, with 4,318 examples built. It returned to the earlier versions' glazed bombardier nose, but a significant number were field- or factory-modified with solid noses armed with up to eight .50 cal machine guns — the so-called 'strafer' noses — in addition to the dorsal, ventral (on early examples) and waist turret guns. It thus combined classic level-bombing capability with low-level strafing capability depending on the mission.
