Mitsubishi A6M Zero A6M8 Tipo 0 Modelo 64

Similar to the A6M6 but with the by-then out-of-production Sakae replaced by the Mitsubishi Kinsei 62, at 1,163 kW (1,560 hp) 60% more powerful than the A6M2's engine, which required an extensively modified cowling and nose: a much larger carburettor intake, a long duct like that on the Nakajima B6N Tenzan, and a large spinner like that on the Yokosuka D4Y fitted with the same Kinsei 62. Armament comprised two 13.2 mm Type 3 machine guns and two 20 mm Type 99 cannon in the wings. The Model 64 was modified to carry two 150 L drop tanks, one under each wing, freeing the ventral point for a 250 kg bomb. Two prototypes were completed and flown in April 1945; the chaotic state of Japanese industry and the end of the war halted the ambitious planned production run of 6,300 aircraft, with only the two prototypes ever completed.
