History
The major revision
The Mk 4000 was the Fellowship's thorough revision. On the long fuselage of the Mk 2000 it added 1.5 m of span, a strengthened wing, two overwing exits on each side, a new flight deck and a 'wide-look' interior with enclosed overhead lockers that broke with the tubular feel of the original aeroplane. The quieter Rolls-Royce Spey 555-15H engines answered the growing pressure over airport noise.
Entry into service
It was approved on 13 December 1976 and the first prototype appeared on 20 October that year. It debuted with Linjeflyg, one of the world's largest Fokker operators, at the end of 1976. At 33,110 kg maximum weight it carried up to 85 passengers, twenty more than the original Fellowship.
Assessment
The Mk 4000 is regarded as the most accomplished F28 model and, together with the Mk 3000, sustained sales of the type until production ended in 1987 in favour of the Fokker 100 and Fokker 70.
