Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Fw 190 S-5

The Fw 190 was a demanding fighter, and the Luftwaffe needed dual-control aircraft for pilot conversion. The solution was not a new airframe but the rebuilding of veteran aircraft: several Fw 190 A-5s were converted by replacing the MW 50 injection system tank with a second cockpit. The original canopy gave way to a new three-section unit that opened to the side, and the rear portion of the fuselage was closed off with sheet metal.

Those aircraft first received the sub-variant designation A-5/U1 and later the trainer family's own designation, Fw 190 S-5. The same treatment was applied to A-8 airframes, which became A-8/U1 and were then redesignated Fw 190 S-8. Between the two series an estimated fifty-eight training aircraft were converted or built, a small figure that reflects both how late the programme came and the absolute priority given to combat aircraft production in the last years of the war.
