Douglas DC-4 DC-4M-2/3 North Star

Canadair built in Canada a variant of the DC-4 powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin engines instead of the Twin Wasp radials, which let it fly over 40% faster. The DC-4M-2/3 North Star is that family's civil version for Trans-Canada Airlines, with four Merlin 622s; 20 were built.

The North Star family is broad: the DC-4M-1X prototype, which ended up as part of the TCA order; the DC-4M-2/4 with Merlin 624 engines and its DC-4M-2/4C cargo conversions, made between 1954 and 1961; the six DC-4M-1 North Star Mk M1 that TCA operated on loan from the Royal Canadian Air Force; the 24 military C-54GM North Star Mk 1 with Merlin 620s — the first six actually modified DC-4s; BOAC's 22 C-4 Argonauts; Canadian Pacific's four C-4-1 "Canadair Four" and their C-4-1C cargo conversions; and the sole C-5 North Star, an RCAF VIP transport with Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radials. Canadair numbered them internally CL-2, CL-4 and CL-5.
