The RAF's troop transport
The Model 253, designated Britannia C.1 in the Royal Air Force, is the military passenger and freight version: a full-length heavy-duty floor and provision for rearward-facing seats, as the RAF preferred for crash survivability. Capacity is 115 troops or the equivalent in cargo. Twenty were built.
Together with the three 252s they formed the Transport Command Britannia fleet bought in 1959. After withdrawal from military service in 1975, many were sold on the civil market as freighters designated Series 253F, closing the circle with the 200 series freighter Bristol had projected and never built.
