Video from the channel The Interpreter about Boeing 737, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 12:43. Language: English. Video type: Documentary.

What it's about

This is an explainer piece that uses simple animations to go through nine serious Boeing 737 accidents: Southwest 1380, United 553, Lion Air 610, Ethiopian Airlines 302, Turkish Airlines 1951, flydubai 981, Air India Express 1344, Helios Airways 522 and Ukraine International Airlines flight 752.

Historical background

The cases span from 1972 to 2020. In 1972, United 553 stalled while approaching Chicago Midway with the spoilers deployed. In 2020, Iran's Revolutionary Guard mistakenly shot down flight 752 with two surface-to-air missiles shortly after takeoff from Tehran. Among the causes are a fatigue failure of a fan blade, faulty sensors, crew procedural errors and a pressurization system left in manual mode after maintenance.

Key facts

The two 737 MAX 8 accidents, in October 2018 and March 2019, are attributed to the MCAS system. This system pushed the nose down based on a single faulty angle-of-attack sensor, and pilots had received no training on it. All 157 people aboard the Ethiopian flight died. In Turkish 1951, a faulty radio altimeter sent the engines to idle during the approach to Schiphol. In flydubai 981, the aircraft crashed in Rostov-on-Don during its second go-around attempt, after nearly two hours of holding. In Air India Express 1344, the aircraft touched down too far along the tabletop runway at Calicut and ran off the embankment.
