Antonov AN-148 - Un nombre heredado de la industria soviética y hoy con carácter Ucraniano.
Video from the channel Historias de Vuelos about Antonov An-148, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 6:35. Language: Spanish. Video type: Documentary.
What it's about
A Spanish-language explainer about the Antonov An-148, a twin-engine high-wing regional passenger aircraft designed by the Ukrainian company Antonov. It covers its origins, production in Ukraine and Russia, operators, variants and accidents, and ends with the An-178, the military transport derived from it.
Historical context
According to the video, the project responded to the aging fleet from the Soviet era that was still flying in the countries of the former bloc, with aircraft such as the An-24, the Tu-134 or the Yak-42. The engines are mounted high up to prevent them from ingesting objects on unpaved runways. Antonov authorized the Russian company VASO, in Voronezh, to build it. Later, the war in Donbas made it difficult for Ukrainian components to arrive, which delayed deliveries and reduced orders.
Highlights
The first flight took place on December 17, 2004. On December 21, 2009 the aircraft entered service between Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and in 2010 AeroSvit used it on international routes such as Kyiv-Warsaw. The stretched version, the An-158, holds up to 99 passengers. Cubana de Aviación grounded its six aircraft due to technical problems. The video recalls the 2011 accident during a training flight and the one involving Saratov Airlines flight 703 in February 2018, with no survivors among the 71 people on board, after which Russia banned the An-148 from flying. The An-178 first flew on May 7, 2015.
