Lufthansa brings the Airbus A380 back: the aircraft registered Mike Kilo takes off from Teruel airport bound for Frankfurt on its first flight after more than two years in storage. It is the first of the four A380s the airline plans to return to service.

Lufthansa had retired the model at the start of the pandemic, since its high fuel consumption makes it unprofitable without full occupancy. Rising demand and manufacturers' inability to deliver new aircraft in the short term now justify its return. Reactivating it requires about 2,500 hours of work by 40 people over four weeks in Teruel.

Before resuming operations in summer, crews must revalidate their licenses: only 12 Lufthansa pilots still held one.
