It explains that the extravehicular activity had been planned for a later Gemini flight and was moved forward in response to the Soviet spacewalk: a small team secretly prepared the umbilical hose, the equipment and the procedures at night.

It shows White leaving the spacecraft 178 miles above Hawaii and moving about with a small gas gun. Christopher Kraft, worried about his safety, ordered him to return after 20 minutes; White described it as the saddest moment of his life.

For mission control it was the first sign that the gap with the Soviets was now being measured in months rather than years.
