The mission

This is low-quality, period television coverage of the launch of Apollo 6 (AS-502), the second, uncrewed test flight of the Saturn V. It has two segments: from liftoff to stage separation, and from 7 min 35 s of flight to third-stage ignition.

Sequence

The commentator narrates the countdown, the retraction of the service arm and liftoff at 7:00 a.m. Eastern time. After clearing the tower, Houston takes control, the roll and pitch programs begin toward a heading of 72 degrees, and all five F-1 engines are confirmed to be running well. Around 1 min 25 s the vehicle passes through the region of maximum dynamic pressure. Flight director Cliff Charlesworth checks with his team before separation. The center engine and then the four outer engines shut down, the second stage ignites, and the first stage separates as planned. The guidance computer then steers the vehicle.

Result

At 7 min 45 s a preliminary warning arrives: engines two and three of the second stage have been lost, but guidance is holding. The delay in separation is attributed to that engine failure. Afterward, ignition of the S-IVB stage is confirmed, at an altitude of 105.7 nautical miles, and flight dynamics certifies the trajectory as good.
