Apollo 13: A Mission Against All Odds | The Education Magazine |
Video from the channel The Education Magazine about Apollo 13, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 4:38. Language: English. Video type: Documentary.
This is a short educational video from The Education Magazine about the Apollo 13 mission. It was meant to be the third Moon landing in history and ended up becoming a survival story. The video explains that Ken Mattingly was replaced by Jack Swigert due to his exposure to rubella, and that the spacecraft launched on April 11, 1970, with Jim Lovell and Fred Haise.
About 56 hours after launch, while stirring the cryogenic tanks, an explosion damaged the service module. The crew spent four days in the Aquarius lunar module, which they used as a lifeboat. They had little water, near-freezing temperatures, and an improvised carbon dioxide filter. The spacecraft finally splashed down in the Pacific.
