The FAA certifies the Boeing 737

The US Federal Aviation Administration approved the Boeing 737 type certificate on 15 December 1967, eight months after the 737-100 first flew. That original certificate remained the legal basis of the whole family: decades later, the 737 MAX was certified as an amendment to it rather than as a new design.
