Dozens of Bf 109s (A through E variants) first saw active service with the Condor Legion in mid-1937, replacing the Heinkel He 51 biplane against Republican-flown Soviet Polikarpov I-15 and I-16 fighters. A total of 136 Bf 109s were sent to Spain; 47 of them remained in service with the Spanish Air Force after the war ended in 1939.
