Twenty victories in 24 days

Werner Voss claimed 20 confirmed kills in just 24 days at the controls of the Fokker Dr.1. By 11 September 1917 his victory tally had reached 47, a figure surpassed only by the Red Baron's 61. Voss, along with Manfred von Richthofen and Kurt Wolff, was among the pilots who flew the two F.I aircraft into combat, and both he and Wolff died flying them in September.

The last fight, 23 September 1917

His last stand came on 23 September 1917, just hours after his 48th victory. He was flying a silver-blue Fokker Dr.1 and fought alone. A prolonged burst eventually stalled the engine. Voss fought the British aces for about eight minutes, managed to evade them and hit nearly every SE.5a; his already-damaged aircraft crashed near Plum Farm, north of Frezenberg, in Belgium, at around 18:40.
