Why is Air Force Day celebrated?

Short answer

Each country celebrates Air Force Day on its own date tied to its origin or patron saint. In Spain it's December 10, Our Lady of Loreto, patron of aviators since 1920; in the United States, September 18, the USAF's anniversary (1947); in Argentina, August 10, for the 1912 Military Aviation School.

A holiday with as many dates as countries

There's no universal Air Force Day. Each state chose a date that sums up its own aviation history: the founding of its first flying school, the birth of the arm as an independent service, the death of a pioneer, or the feast day of its patron saint. That's why the military calendar is full of different celebrations sharing the same name.

Spain and the tradition of Loreto

Spain's Air and Space Force marks its day on December 10, the feast of Our Lady of Loreto. The choice dates back to 1920, when Pope Benedict XV proclaimed her patron saint of aviators at the request of Italian airmen: the legend of the Holy House of Nazareth, carried by angels to Loreto, linked her to flight. Spain's Military Aeronautics adopted the patronage shortly after, and the date survived the creation of the Ejército del Aire (Air Force) in 1939. On that day bases open their gates, decorations are awarded, and the fallen are remembered.

Founding anniversaries

The United States marks September 18, the date the National Security Act of 1947 split the USAF off from the Army. Argentina celebrates August 10, the anniversary of the Military Aviation School founded in 1912 at El Palomar, the seed of its current air force. Chile chose March 21, the day in 1930 the Army's and Navy's air services merged. Peru honors Captain José Quiñones on July 23, killed in combat in 1941. Mexico marks February 10, 1944, when its military aviation was renamed the Mexican Air Force.

The underlying pattern is that the date serves to assert the identity of a service that, in almost every country, was born subordinate to the army and had to earn its independence.
