From touring aircraft to museum piece

The N7777G is one of the Constellations with the most colorful history. Besides its working life, it went down in popular music history because it carried the Rolling Stones' equipment during the band's 1973 Australian tour. By then Constellations had already been pushed off the major routes by jets, and many were used for charter and cargo flights, a role in which their lower speed was no drawback.

Borrowed colors

Today the aircraft is part of the collections of the UK's Science Museum and is kept at its large-object storage facility in Wroughton, near Swindon. It wears a TWA paint scheme, the airline most associated with the Constellation because of Howard Hughes's ties to the type, even though this particular aircraft never flew for TWA. According to the Spanish-language encyclopedia, it is the only Constellation in the United Kingdom and can be visited on certain open days.

A type that crossed continents

That a Constellation ended up carrying a rock band's gear to the other side of the world fits the aircraft's history: designed from the outset for long range, with a pressurized cabin and four Wright R-3350 engines, it was for years the airlines' tool for crossing oceans. Pan American even inaugurated the first scheduled round-the-world service with an L-749 in 1947. After being withdrawn from passenger service, dozens of examples kept flying for cargo and charter operators, and some, like the N7777G, were saved from scrapping to end up in museums.
