How big is the Boeing 737 MAX 10?

Short answer

The Boeing 737 MAX 10 is 43.8 m (143 ft 8 in) long, has a wingspan of 35.9 m (117 ft 10 in) and stands 12.3 m (40 ft 4 in) tall. It is the longest 737 ever built: it carries 188-204 passengers in two classes and up to 230 in a single class, with a range of about 5,740 km (3,100 nmi).

Dimensions compared with the rest of the family

With a 43.8 m fuselage, the MAX 10 is 1.6 m longer than the MAX 9 and more than 4 m longer than the MAX 8, the best-selling model. The 35.9 m wingspan with split-tip winglets and the 12.3 m height are shared by all MAX variants, because the wing and tail do not change: Boeing stretched the fuselage in two sections, one ahead of and one behind the wing, to add rows of seats. Its length is comparable to the Airbus A321neo's (44.5 m), its direct rival in the high-capacity single-aisle segment.

The landing gear problem

Such a long fuselage sitting on landing gear as short as the 737's, inherited from the 1960s, raised the risk of a tail strike during takeoff rotation. Boeing solved it with a telescoping main gear that extends about 24 cm (9.5 in) on takeoff and contracts again when retracted, so it still fits in the original wheel well. It is one of the few genuinely new parts on the aircraft, and a sign of just how far a design conceived in 1964 has been stretched.

Capacity and performance

Boeing offers it with 188 to 204 seats in two classes and a certifiable maximum of 230, a maximum takeoff weight of about 89.8 t (198,000 lb) and a range of 5,740 km (3,100 nmi) with CFM LEAP-1B engines. Compared with the A321neo, which can carry up to 244 passengers and fly somewhat farther, the MAX 10 is slightly smaller and lighter. It is the largest 737 the company has ever built, intended for very dense domestic and medium-haul routes, and its certification has slipped years behind the original schedule due to the regulatory scrutiny that followed the MAX 8 accidents.
