Did you know…
When are the fighter jets in Gijón?
Short answer
Fighter jets fly in Gijón at the International Air Festival, held every summer over San Lorenzo beach, usually on a Sunday in the second half of July, with Eurofighters, F-18s and the Patrulla Águila. The exact date is announced by the city council a few months ahead each year; the 2027 date is not yet set (as of September 2026).

A well-established date
The Gijón International Air Festival has been held since the mid-2000s and has become one of Spain's most crowded aviation events, drawing tens of thousands of spectators along the Paseo del Muro and San Lorenzo beach. The bay offers a natural amphitheatre: the aircraft fly over the sea, in front of the public, without overflying the city, which simplifies safety and allows low-altitude displays. The date moves within the summer calendar and usually falls in the second half of July, though it's worth confirming on the city council's website.
What you can usually see
The programme depends on the availability of the military units, but there are regular participants: the Patrulla Águila (transitioning from the C-101 to the Pilatus PC-21), a solo Eurofighter display, F-18s from the Spanish Air and Space Force, the Canadair CL-415 amphibious aircraft putting out simulated fires, maritime rescue and SAR helicopters, and historic aircraft from the Fundación Infante de Orleans. Display teams and fighters from other European countries often take part too, such as the Patrouille de France, the Frecce Tricolori or Portuguese Air Force aircraft.
How to follow it
The displays are concentrated in the afternoon, though rehearsals and arrivals are visible in the preceding days from Asturias Airport, in Santiago del Monte, where most of the aircraft operate from. The official programme, with timings and participants, is published on the Gijón City Council website and its social media in the preceding weeks; it's worth checking because it changes with the weather and operational contingencies. During the festival weekend, the city restricts traffic around the beach area.
