Did you know…

How many military aircraft does Spain have?

Short answer

Spain has around 500 military aircraft (as of September 2026): about 330 in the Air and Space Force, including fighters, transports, trainers and helicopters; more than 100 helicopters in the Army's FAMET and around 50 aircraft in the Navy. Published figures vary depending on whether stored or yet-to-be-delivered aircraft are counted.

Air and Space Force

It is the largest operator, with roughly 330 aircraft. Alongside around 150 fighters (Eurofighter Typhoon and F/A-18 Hornet) there is a transport and refueling fleet: 14 Airbus A400Ms on order, the A330 MRTT being brought into service, C295 and CN235 for tactical cargo and maritime patrol, and the Falcon 900s used for VIP transport. Training relies on the Pilatus PC-21, which replaced the C-101, and on the T-35 Tamiz and Beechcraft Bonanza, while NH90, Super Puma and H135 helicopters cover search and rescue and training. The 43rd Group provides the CL-415 and CL-215T amphibious firefighting aircraft, and MQ-9 Predator B unmanned aircraft fly out of Talavera la Real.

FAMET and the Navy

The Army's Airmobile Forces (FAMET) operate more than a hundred helicopters: Tiger attack helicopters, NH90 and CH-47F Chinook transports, and Cougar and EC135 for liaison and training. The Navy adds the AV-8B Harrier II, SH-60B and SH-60F Seahawk helicopters, NH90 and AB-212, the veteran SH-3D Sea King now being retired, Cessna Citation light aircraft and ScanEagle drones.

Why the figure varies

Public counts range between 450 and 550 aircraft depending on whether they include aircraft in storage, undergoing modernization or awaiting delivery, and whether unmanned systems are counted. The Ministry of Defence does not publish a consolidated inventory, so the most widely cited figures come from specialized yearbooks that are updated annually with new additions and retirements. The trend is toward a somewhat smaller but more modern fleet: the 45 Eurofighters from Halcón I and II, the A330 MRTT and the NH90 replace more aircraft than they add.
