Event and crew
Recording of the twilight session of the Meeting des Ailes de Cambrai on Saturday 3 September 2022, a rehearsal with an audience invited by the sponsors that began at dusk and ended after dark. The organiser, Philippe Macé, presents it as a "sunset", a twilight display, and at the end thanks the work of around 250 volunteers. The evening closes with institutional speeches, including one from the chair of the Communauté d'agglomération de Cambrai, which was celebrating its anniversary.
What you see
The programme kicks off with a transport aircraft carrying an ambassador of the Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace on board, followed by the Patrouille de France and the 2022 Rafale Solo Display. The announcer explains that in the first part of the display the patrol's pilots never take their eyes off the leader's aircraft, which is responsible for the flight paths and the group's safety, and describes the formation changes, such as the switch from diamond to big arrow. He recalls that the patrol is based at Air Base 701 at Salon-de-Provence, which is also home to the École de l'air et de l'espace.
A wingwalking act follows: Danielle stands on the upper wing of a Stearman biplane flown by Emiliano while the commentator recalls the flying circuses of 1920s America with Curtiss Jenny aircraft. Classic aerobatic figures follow, such as the bell, in which the aircraft rises vertically and falls back before dropping, an OV-10 Bronco that came from Montélimar, and a red aerobatic monoplane. By nightfall, the Patrouille Carnet de Vol flies with smoke and lights, and the show ends with fireworks and bagpipes.
The aircraft on display
The Rafale and the Patrouille de France aircraft are the stars of the military part. The civilian part is made up of vintage and aerobatic aircraft: the Stearman from the wingwalking act, the Bronco, and the competition monoplanes, which the announcer links to French aerobatics champions.
