History
The F-4K (Phantom FG.Mk.1) was developed to operate from British Royal Navy aircraft carriers. It replaced the General Electric J79 turbojets with Rolls-Royce Spey 201 turbofans, chosen to give enough take-off power from the smaller British carriers, at the cost of a lower maximum speed and ceiling than the equivalent US versions.
