Unlike the earlier, ground-attack-oriented upgrades, Increment 3.2 emphasised air combat, with updates to electronic warfare, to the communications, navigation and identification suite — including Link 16 receive — and to geolocation, plus integration of the AIM-9X and AIM-120D missiles. Fleet releases of the two parts of the process began in 2013 and 2019 respectively. At the same time, Operational Flight Program updates added the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System, cryptographic enhancements and more stable avionics. From 2021 a MIDS-JTRS terminal with Mode 5 IFF and Link 16 transmit and receive capability was installed, and the mission computers were renewed with military-hardened commercial off-the-shelf processor modules and a modular open systems architecture. From then on, development abandoned the waterfall model of the increments and moved to numbered annual software releases.
