History
The F-22 and its subsystems were conceived to evolve over their service life through numbered increments and Operational Flight Program updates, anticipating both technological advances and evolving threats. In practice, the highly integrated avionics architecture made those upgrades difficult and costly at first. Amid the debate over the aircraft's relevance in asymmetric counterinsurgency conflicts, the first upgrades were directed at ground attack: Increment 2, in 2005, added JDAM employment.
