History
The Il-18D was the definitive passenger version and the one that set the figures usually quoted for the type: 35.9 m long, 37.4 m span, 64,000 kg maximum take-off weight, 675 km/h top speed and an 11,800 m ceiling. With the supplementary centre-section tank it reached 6,500 km carrying 6,500 kg of payload, or 3,700 km at maximum payload.
Its four 3,169 kW Ivchenko AI-20M engines drove four-bladed AW-68 I constant-speed propellers of 4.5 m diameter. Equipment included RPSN-2AMG weather radar, the NAS-1B autonomous navigation system, SP-50 Materik ILS and a TG-16M auxiliary power unit, a fit that allowed ICAO CAT 1 approaches. Built on this airframe were the Il-18D Salon VIP transport, three communications relay aircraft, the Il-18DORR and Il-18D Pomor fishery reconnaissance conversions, the two Il-24N ice reconnaissance machines and, above all, the Il-20M and Il-22 military versions.
