The Herald that was to carry cars
The HPR.8 answered a 1959 Silver City Airways requirement for a car ferry. It had a new, unpressurised fuselage with clamshell doors in the nose and could carry six cars or 100 passengers.
It was not built: Silver City preferred the Aviation Traders Carvair, the Douglas DC-4 conversion with a raised cockpit and swing nose. It is one of several dead branches of the Herald project, along with the tactical HP.124 for the RAF, the HP.125 V/STOL with eighteen Rolls-Royce RB162 lift jets in underwing pods, the HP.127 "Jet Herald" and the HP.129 "Mini Herald".
