Grumman F-14 Tomcat F-14AM

Cut off from American supply since 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force kept its Tomcats flying on its own resources, including the fitting of domestically built radars. In 2012 the Mehrabad overhaul centre delivered an aircraft with weapon systems upgraded from locally sourced components, designated F-14AM. A shortage of Phoenix missiles prompted attempts to integrate the Russian R-27 semi-active radar-guided missile, which were unsuccessful; modified MIM-23 Hawk missiles were used as an alternative.
