History
The first stretch
The Mk 2000 lengthened the Mk 1000 fuselage with two plugs — one of 1.4 m ahead of the wing and another of 0.76 m behind it — taking length to 29.6 m and maximum capacity to 79 passengers. The prototype was a converted Mk 1000, which flew on 28 April 1971.
Service and figures
It entered revenue service with Nigeria Airways in October 1971 and was formally approved on 30 August 1972. Despite the logic of the stretch — more seats without changing engines or wing — only ten were built: maximum weight remained that of the Mk 1000, 29,480 kg, which limited the payload of the longer cabin.
Descendants
The Mk 2000 fuselage was reused unchanged in the Mk 4000, which added the longer-span wing and Spey 555-15H engines, and in the experimental slatted Mk 6000.
