The Mirage Milan originated in an early-1970s Swiss requirement seeking to improve the takeoff and landing qualities of the Mirage III/5 without redesigning the airframe from scratch. Dassault's solution was to fit a small pair of retractable canard foreplanes on either side of the nose, just ahead of the cockpit, which deployed at low speed to generate extra lift and improve handling on takeoff and landing; because of their appearance, the aircraft picked up the informal nickname ‘moustaches’. The starting airframe was that of the Mirage 5, powered by the SNECMA Atar 9K-50 turbojet, the most powerful in the family at the time, and later test phases of the programme also added a laser rangefinder in the nose to improve air-to-ground targeting accuracy.

Two prototypes were built, designated Milan S (for the Swiss requirement) and Milan S2, and the type went as far as demonstration flights and evaluation campaigns aimed at a possible sale to Switzerland and to other export customers interested in upgrading their Mirage III/5 fleets with the same retractable-canard kit. Despite the initial interest, no customer placed a production order: the captured material documents different closure dates for the programme depending on the source — the English Wikipedia places the project's abandonment around 1972, while the French Wikipédia places it around 1976 — a discrepancy between sources that is explicitly stated here without resolution, for lack of a primary source to settle the exact date.

Although the Milan never reached series production, the fixed-canard concept — derived from this same aerodynamic research line and from the Mirage IIING demonstrator — was later carried over into mid-life upgrade programmes for aircraft already in service, such as the upgrade package applied to Swiss Mirage IIIS between 1988 and 1992 and to Brazilian Mirage IIIEBR/DBR during the 1980s, both documented in their respective entries in this census. Only two Milan prototypes ever flew, and no third airframe was built, which is why the type is documented here strictly as a technology demonstrator rather than as an operational version of the family.
