CASA C-212 Aviocar NC212-100

In 1975, a year after the Spanish Air Force settled on the Aviocar, the Indonesian company IPTN negotiated terms with CASA to build up to 108 aircraft under licence. Assembly was set up at Bandung, with Nurtanio taking part in manufacture and a delegation of Spanish technicians sent to train local personnel. The relative simplicity of the C-212's design has been credited with making that industrial transplant work.

The first Indonesian series, the NC212-100, entered production in 1976 and reached 28 aircraft before the line switched to the NC212-200. The licence allowed IPTN to sell throughout the Asian market, but most aircraft went to domestic customers: by 1986 only six had been exported.

That agreement proved decisive in the long run. By 2000 a total of 95 NC212s had been built in Indonesia, and when Airbus decided it could no longer afford to build the Aviocar in Europe it was Bandung — by then Indonesian Aerospace — that inherited the whole type.
