History

Cubana's Britannias

The four Model 318s were delivered to Cubana de Aviación from 15 December 1958 and served on transatlantic routes. Despite the Cuban Revolution, the airline kept a special accord with the British manufacturers to maintain the type in service. One was leased to Cunard Eagle in 1960–1961 and the same aircraft to Czechoslovakia's CSA in 1962.

In 1975 several Cuban Britannias carried hundreds of soldiers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces to Angola during Operation Carlota. Cubana went on flying its Britannia fleet until March 1990, and with spares bought from Cubana and the Royal Aircraft Establishment several Zairean airlines kept some on regular cargo flights out of N'djili Airport into the early 1990s.
