Arianespace successfully launched the new Vega-C on 13 July from Kourou, French Guiana, on its maiden flight.
The Vega-C is an upgraded version of the Vega, in service since 2012. It is 35 m tall and 3.3 m in diameter, can carry up to 2,200 kg to an altitude of 700 km, and has three solid stages and a liquid upper stage. On this flight it placed seven satellites into orbit. The main payload was LARES-2, from the Italian Space Agency, which reached orbit an hour and a half after liftoff. The other six were scientific cubesats, released an hour later.
The piece adds that Arianespace is developing the Vega E, with three stages and a cryogenic liquid oxygen/methane upper stage. Its maiden flight was planned for 2025.
