Video from the channel Space Clips about N1, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 4:29. Video type: Documentary.

Fragment narrated in Russian reviewing the failed launch attempts of the Soviet lunar rocket N1. It combines footage of the rollout to the launch pad, the liftoffs and the aftermath of the accidents.

The video explains that, following Soviet practice, the N1 was transported to the launch pad in a horizontal position. Because of its enormous size it was assembled at the cosmodrome itself, something now cited as one of the causes of its poor manufacturing quality. Mishin succeeded Korolev as chief designer.

Among the facts given: the rocket was 105 meters tall and carried a cluster of 30 engines at its base. On the second attempt, on July 3, the engines shut down at about 200 meters of altitude and the rocket fell back onto the pad. The narrator puts the explosion at 5,000 tons of TNT. The last flight lasted 107 seconds.
