Video from the channel RDrone UY about Electron, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 16:55. Language: English. Video type: Launch.

The mission

The video covers Rocket Lab's official broadcast of the launch of Electron number 30, lifting off from Launch Complex 1 on the Mahia Peninsula. The rocket carries Synspective's StriX-1 satellite. According to the broadcast, the flight uses Rutherford engine number 300 and is the 150th satellite launched by the company.

Sequence

After the countdown and liftoff, Electron passes the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure at just over 15 km altitude, with its nine sea-level Rutherford engines running normally. First-stage shutdown follows, then stage separation and ignition of the second stage's vacuum-optimized Rutherford. The payload fairing then separates, revealing the payload. Figures are given of over 8,000 km/h at 131 km altitude and, later, over 19,000 km/h at 206 km. The second stage performs a hot-swap of batteries: electric pumps are powered by batteries, and depleted ones are jettisoned to avoid carrying dead weight. The broadcast also explains that the cloud at liftoff is steam from the water deluge system that absorbs the engines' acoustic energy. It also mentions that two weeks earlier a recovered Rutherford had been test-fired for the first time.

Outcome

After second-stage shutdown, the kick stage separates cleanly. From there begins a coast phase of about 50 minutes to the apogee of the elliptical orbit. There, the Curie engine circularizes the orbit before releasing StriX-1, expected around T+53 minutes. The broadcast announces a simulated view of the deployment, as there will be no live video of the kick stage. The clip ends before that phase.
