The human-rated Atlas D used for the orbital half of Project Mercury. It flew nine times between 1960 and 1963, four of them with an astronaut aboard. Convair built it on a dedicated assembly line and fitted it with a failure-sensing system able to command the escape tower.

Turning a weapon into a crew launcher
When NASA had to pick a booster for the orbital Mercury flights, the Atlas D was the only American rocket with enough performance and with a test record deep enough to learn from. That record was also the difficulty: the missile had been built as a weapon, and its development flights failed often enough to worry everyone involved. The astronauts watched one of those failures in person shortly after joining the programme.
Human-rating the vehicle turned out to be less about redesign than about scrutiny. Convair expected reliability to reach three quarters of flights early in 1961 and a little more by the end of that year, and NASA covered the remaining margin with quality assurance: a separate production line, hand-picked inspectors, components earmarked and stored apart from other Atlas hardware, and a rule that no new equipment could carry a crew until it had flown on at least three research flights.
The abort sensing system
The genuinely new hardware was ASIS, the network that watched the booster's subsystems and fired the escape tower if something went wrong. Its redundancy worked backwards: if ASIS itself lost power, that loss counted as an abort command. It first flew open-loop, able to raise the signal but not to shut the engines down, and was only later allowed to act on the propulsion system. The escape tower was identical to the one used on the Redstone flights, but the sensing had to be rebuilt from scratch, because the Atlas had five thrust chambers, two of them jettisoned in flight, and pressurised tanks that collapsed if they lost pressure.
Service and legacy
Nine LV-3B vehicles flew. The best remembered lifted off on 20 February 1962, when John Glenn circled the Earth three times aboard Friendship 7 and became the first American in orbit. Three more crewed orbital flights followed, the last of them in 1963.
What stands out about these boosters is how deliberately unadventurous they were: proven, well-understood hardware was preferred to newer and better hardware. Each Mercury vehicle took twice as long to build and three times as long to check out as an ordinary Atlas. That discipline, rather than any single technical improvement, is what the programme handed on to every crewed launcher that followed.
