Watch the video on YouTube: NASA 1969 APOLLO 9 MISIÓN LUNAR MARINER MISIÓN A MARTE AVIÓN VTOL 87174dVideo from the channel PeriscopeFilm about Apollo 9, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 9:21. Language: English. Video type: Archive footage.
What it shows
An episode of NASA's "Aeronautics and Space Report" newsreel with three segments. The first introduces Apollo 9: it opens with New York's tribute to Borman, Lovell, and Anders after Apollo 8 and continues with the three crew members. James McDivitt, 39, commander of the 66-orbit Gemini 4 flight, appears training in a lunar landing research vehicle and explains that the mission was to test the lunar module's systems and operations with two crewed spacecraft at once. David R. Scott, 36, had performed the first docking in space with Neil Armstrong on Gemini 8. Russell L. Schweickart, 33, was preparing for a roughly two-hour spacewalk. Illustrations show the docking and extraction of lunar module 3, and the segment recalls the Saturn's five F-1 engines, with more than 7.5 million pounds of thrust.
When and where it was filmed
It is a 1969 NASA production, made before the Apollo 9 flight, presented in the future tense.
Context
The other two segments cover different topics. Mariner Mars 69 presents two 850-pound probes that were to fly by Mars at about 2,000 miles, with statements from William Pickering, director of JPL. The third segment reviews vertical takeoff aircraft in NASA testing: the XV-5B, with fans in its wings; the XC-142, a tilt-wing design derived from wind-tunnel testing since 1956; and the Hawker P.1127, with a 15,000-pound-thrust engine.
