Video from the channel Aviación about Mikoyan, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 5:50. Language: Spanish. Video type: Documentary.

What it's about

An explainer piece on the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, a second- or third-generation Soviet fighter, narrated over footage of the aircraft with background music. It covers its origins, production, combat use and the modernisation programmes that have extended its operational life.

Historical context

The video places its entry into service in 1961 and explains that its versions ranged from pure fighter and interceptor to multirole fighter. As Western equivalents it mentions the Northrop F-5 and the French Mirage III. The first MiG-21F-13s reached Cuba in early September 1962, were assembled in Santa Clara and from 22 October that year, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, were kept on combat alert. They also saw combat in the Middle East wars with Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, with the Indian Air Force in the wars against Pakistan and in the Iran–Iraq War.

Key facts

According to the video it is the most-produced supersonic fighter in history, with over 12,000 units across a dozen versions, including those built in Czechoslovakia, India and China; the USSR stopped producing it in 1983. It has a delta wing, a turbojet engine, exceeds Mach 2 and employs guided air-to-air missiles. Among the modernisation packages on offer it cites the Russian MiG-21-93, Israel's MiG-21 2000 with Romania, and the Chinese F-7MG.
