What it's about

A documentary about the BAe 146 and its evolution, the Avro RJ: a regional jet with a high wing, T-tail and four engines, known as the Whisperjet for its quietness and in Latin America as the Jumbolino.

Historical context

Hawker Siddeley launched the HS.146 project in August 1973 to fill the gap between turboprops such as the HS 748 or the F27 and jets such as the BAC One-Eleven or the 737, with financial backing from the British Government. The oil crisis halted work in 1974, and British Aerospace resumed it in 1978. LAPA was the first airline to order it, the prototype flew on 3 September 1981, and Dan-Air introduced it into passenger service in 1983. In the early 1990s production was concentrated at Woodford under the Avro brand, which gave its name to the RJ70, RJ85 and RJ100 versions.

Key facts

It was fitted with four geared Avco Lycoming ALF 502 turbofans, without thrust reversers; the RJs switched to the Honeywell LF507 and introduced a digital cockpit. The 200 series, lengthened by 2.4 m, flew on 1 August 1982 and outsold the 100; the 300 reached 112 seats. Thanks to its steep approach it was able to operate from London City from 1987. By 2002, 221 BAe 146s and 166 RJs had been built, 387 in total; the RJX was cancelled for lack of interest.
