Vulcan XA897 crashes while landing at Heathrow

October 1, 1956

Vulcan B.1 XA897, one of the first delivered to the RAF, was returning from an overseas demonstration tour when it tried to land at London Heathrow Airport in very poor weather. The aircraft struck the ground short of the runway and was destroyed. The captain and co-pilot escaped on their ejection seats, but the other three crew members and a passenger, seated behind them without ejection seats, were killed.
