Milestone
The B-24 Liberator and closing the Mid-Atlantic Gap
1943
Very Long Range (VLR) versions of the B-24 Liberator, together with the naval PB4Y variants, gave the Allies their first air cover over the Mid-Atlantic Gap, the stretch of ocean where German U-boats had previously operated free of aerial threat. Liberators were credited with sinking, in whole or in part, 93 U-boats over the course of the anti-submarine campaign.
