A transport with a tail gunner
The Antonov An-8, NATO reporting name "Camp," is a Soviet-designed light military transport aircraft with a high wing and two turboprops. Among the most striking features at its front and rear are the glazed nose for the navigator, a chin radome for the navigation and mapping radar, and a manned tail position. Aircraft of the Soviet Air Force were armed with a 23 mm cannon mounted in that tail turret.
Side pods and a clear tail
The aircraft had a tricycle landing gear whose main units were housed in pods on either side of the fuselage. The rear fuselage was raised to keep the tail assembly clear during loading and unloading operations. The fuselage section was rectangular and could carry 60 soldiers, 40 passengers, or a wide variety of vehicles, from ASU-57 assault guns to BTR-40 and BTR-152 armoured personnel carriers or artillery pieces.
The USSR's first dedicated military transport
The An-8 was the USSR's first dedicated military transport aircraft. It needed a modernisation that was never undertaken, because the more advanced An-12 was soon developed to replace it.
