A code for schedules and bookings

The International Air Transport Association, IATA, assigns each type of commercial aircraft a short code that airlines use in their schedules, booking systems and documentation. For the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation that code is L49, an abbreviation that keeps the manufacturer's letter and the last digits of the model designation. It should not be confused with the type certificate number, which is a different identifier: in the case of the Super Constellation, the FAA certificate — the FAA being the United States' civil aviation authority — is 6A5.

The stretched Constellation

The L-1049 was the major evolution of the original Constellation. Lockheed stretched the fuselage by 5.59 metres (18 ft 4 in), producing a long-range four-engined airliner with a pressurised cabin for between 62 and 95 passengers in typical configurations and up to 106 at maximum, with a crew of three or four. It kept the features that had made the model famous: the dolphin-shaped fuselage and the triple tail.

Turbo Compound engines

In the L-1049G version, the best known, the aircraft carried four Wright R-3350 972TC-18DA-3 Turbo Compound radial engines of 2,424 kW (3,250 hp) each, giving it a cruising speed of 483 km/h. It measured 35.42 metres (116 ft 2 in) in length and 7.54 metres (24 ft 9 in) in height. The Super Constellation was one of the last great piston-engined airliners before the arrival of jets, and its L49 code kept appearing in records as long as examples remained in service.
