An ultralight stripped to the essentials

The Aerosport Rail is a minimalist American ultralight designed by Harris Woods and built by Aerosport Inc.. The airframe was little more than a 2-by-5-inch square aluminum tube —the "rail" that gives the aircraft its name— with all-metal wings and a T-tail. The first flight took place on November 14, 1970.

The powerplant

The aircraft carried two small two-stroke engines derated to 25 hp (19 kW), mounted on struts behind the seat, one on each side of the longitudinal axis, driving pusher propellers. These were two Aerosport-Rockwell LB600 automotive engines of 45 hp (34 kW) each, limited to that 25 hp. Each engine had its own 4 US gallon (15 L; 3.3 imp gal) fiberglass fuel tank mounted in front of it.

Plans sold

Between 1970 and 1977, about 175 sets of plans for the Rail were sold.
