A four-engine airliner for medium-haul routes
Development of a four-engine airliner for routes of 500 to 2,000 km began in late 1955. The prototype, named Ukraina, first flew in March 1957. The An-10 entered service in July 1959 on routes from Simferopol to Moscow and Kiev. The developed An-10A version had a fuselage 2 m longer, seated 100 to 130 passengers, and entered service in February 1960.

Record, cracks and withdrawal
On 29 April 1961 Alexander Mitronine flew an An-10 fitted with an Ivchenko AI-20 engine and reached 730.61 km/h on a Kiev-Olevsk-Kazatin-Kiev route. The fatal accident on approach to Kharkiv occurred in 1972, caused by cracks in the wing root spars, stringers and panels that led to the collapse of both wings. After that accident, Aeroflot stopped operating the An-10, and fatigue cracks were found in the center wing section stringers of many of the remaining aircraft. Aviastar dates Aeroflot's withdrawal of the aircraft to 1973.
