A combat evaluation in Vietnam

In October 1965 the USAF launched a five-month combat evaluation of the F-5A codenamed Skoshi Tiger. Twelve aircraft were delivered to the 4503rd Tactical Fighter Squadron for the trials and, after being modified with probe-and-drogue in-flight refueling equipment, armor and improved instruments, they were redesignated F-5C. Updated avionics were also among the model's changes.

From Bien Hoa to May 1967

The aircraft flew combat missions in the Vietnam War over the following six months. They operated from Bien Hoa, in South Vietnam, with the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing. From April 1966 the unit continued operations as the 10th Fighter Commando Squadron and its strength rose to seventeen aircraft. This modified F-5A underwent combat testing in Vietnam with the United States Air Force from October 1965 to May 1967, and seventeen were built.

A result deemed satisfactory

The operations were declared a success. The F-5 was generally rated as capable a ground-attack aircraft as the F-100, though with a shorter range.
