Did you know…

How to watch a space launch

Short answer

There are two ways: live online, through the free broadcasts from SpaceX, NASA, ESA, or Arianespace, which start minutes before liftoff, or in person from public spots near Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg, Kourou, or Baikonur. In Florida, the Kennedy Space Center sells tickets for official viewing areas.

Watching the launch live online

The simplest way is to follow the official broadcast. SpaceX streams all its flights on its website and on X; NASA does so on NASA+ and YouTube; ESA and Arianespace cover Ariane 6 and Vega launches from Kourou. Broadcasts usually start 15 to 30 minutes before the scheduled time and include telemetry, onboard cameras, and commentary. It's worth checking the time on the official source on the day itself: launches are frequently delayed by weather, marine traffic, or technical issues, and the time is usually given in UTC.

Watching in person in Florida

Florida's Space Coast concentrates more orbital launches than anywhere else in the world. The Kennedy Space Center visitor complex sells tickets for official viewing areas, some less than 10 km from the pads. Outside the center there are free public spots: the bridges along State Road 528, Jetty Park in Port Canaveral, Playalinda Beach, and the Titusville riverfront, which has a direct view of Pad 39A. For a night flight or a launch with a booster landing, the experience includes the sonic boom of the landing a few minutes after liftoff.

Other locations and practical tips

At Vandenberg (California) launches are seen from Lompoc's beaches and lookout points; at Kourou (French Guiana) there are viewing areas managed by CNES, requiring advance registration; at Baikonur access requires an organized trip. In every case, arrive early, bring water and sun protection, expect traffic on the way out, and accept that the window may close without a launch. Sound arrives several seconds late, and the rocket is visible for two or three minutes.
