Did you know…
How many Bristol Tramps flew?
Short answer
None: two examples of the Tramp were completed in 1921, and neither of them ever flew. The power transmission system, particularly the clutches, caused continuous problems. In 1922 they were moved to Farnborough, where they served for several years as ground test rigs.
A steam-powered Braemar derivative
The Tramp started from the engine-room design of the Bristol Braemar, a solution that was later revived, during that aircraft's development life, for the projected steam-powered Tramp. Two examples of this design were completed in 1921.
Neither ever flew
Neither of the two ever flew: the aircraft was built, but never took off. The power transmission system, and in particular the clutches, caused continuous problems. There was also the difficulty of designing a boiler and a closed-circuit condenser that were both reliable and light.
Test rigs at Farnborough
In 1922 both examples were moved to Farnborough. There they were used for several years as ground test rigs.
