Did you know…

How many buttons does an airplane cockpit have?

Short answer

There is no fixed figure, and no manufacturer publishes an official count. An analog jet like the classic Boeing 747 spread several hundred switches, dials and lights between the pilots and the flight engineer; a glass cockpit like the A320's or 787's concentrates it on a few screens with far fewer physical controls.

From the flight engineer to the two-pilot cockpit

Commercial airliners of the 1960s and 1970s, like the Boeing 707 or the classic 747, flew with a crew of three because a third position, the flight engineer, monitored engines, fuel, pressurization and electrical systems from a side panel packed with switches, analog dials and warning lights. That panel alone held several hundred controls, not counting those on the pilots' main instrument panel or the overhead panel. Added together, the three stations made those cockpits a visually overwhelming environment, built on a simple principle: every function had its own dedicated physical switch and its own indicator.

The arrival of the glass cockpit

Starting in the 1980s, aircraft like the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 767 introduced the so-called "glass cockpit": electronic screens that replaced dozens of individual analog instruments with a few configurable displays, able to show on demand the information that previously occupied a fixed dial for each parameter. The change made it possible to eliminate the flight engineer's position, because system monitoring was taken over by the aircraft itself, which alerts the crew only when something falls outside normal parameters. The physical controls that remain are grouped mostly on the overhead panel and are used only occasionally.

Why there is no official figure

Neither manufacturers nor aviation authorities publish a count of "buttons per cockpit." The reason is that the very definition of what counts as a control — switches, radio panel keys, autopilot buttons, sidestick or yoke controls, rotary selectors — varies depending on who is counting, and the design is revised with every new generation of avionics. Any specific number circulating online is an enthusiast's estimate, not manufacturer data.
