A biplane with an enclosed compartment

The Avro Type G was a two-bay, two-seat biplane with a fully enclosed crew compartment. Its fuselage occupied the entire space between the upper and lower wings. It first flew in August 1912. Earlier, on 1 May 1912, the Avro Type F had become the world's first aircraft to fly with a fully enclosed cockpit for the pilot as an integral part of its design.

Military trials and a record

In military trials the Type G excelled at assembly tests: it was assembled in just 14 and a half minutes. It then set a British duration record of 7 hours 31 minutes, flown by F. P. Raynham at Brooklands on 24 October.

Parke's spin

The Type G was the second British aircraft to recover from a spin and the first to do so before witnesses. After three hours of flight, Parke strung together a series of dives and entered a spin at about 700 feet. Through a mix of luck, coolness and piloting skill, he regained control at about 50 feet (15 m) from the ground, and the aircraft came out of it under perfect control.
